Course Objectives:
The overall course objective is to provide the student with both a theoretical familiarity and practical operational competence in the Global Maritime Distress and Safety System.
Specific Objectives:
- Background and Purpose of GMDSS
- Principles and basic features of maritime mobile service, including satellite service
- Purpose and Use of Digital Selective Calling facilities, narrow band direct printing and Inmarsat
- Operation and Use of Emergency Indicating Radio Beacons (EPIRBS)
- Operation and Use of Survival Craft Transceiver (SCT) and Search and Rescue Transponder (SART)
- Maritime Safety Information (MSI) services and Search and Rescue Operation (SAR)
- GMDSS Communication Procedures
- Satellite Communication Procedures
- Effective Utility of all Ship Station Equipment

Tankship - D.L. (Dangerous Liquids):
The purpose of the course is to ensure upon completion of training the minimum standard of competence to undertake duties on oil tankers.
Course Objectives:
- Safe handling of oil cargoes and tankship emergency procedures
- Oil Tanker loading and unloading operations and tanker design and equipment operation
- Basic properties of petroleum and its hazards
- Knowledge of the carriage of dangerous, hazardous and harmful cargoes
- Knowledge of international maritime law pertaining to oil tanker operation

Tank Ship - Familiarization (TS-F)
The Tank Ship Familiarization course focuses on three general areas of information: characteristics of oil/chemicals, personnel safety and pollution prevention, and DL tank ship systems/operations. Most students attending this course do so to obtain a basic understanding of DL tank ship cargoes, personal operational safety, and general cargo handling systems as outlined in Title 46 Part 13.121(f).

Advanced Fire Fighting (AFF)
Students will be assessed in the required competance practical demonstrations as described by - Table A VI/3 Record of Assessment "Specification of minimum standard of competence in Advanced Fire Fighting".
Hazardous / Safety Awareness Notice
29 CFR 1910.1200 (Hazardous Communication Standard) requires training and information on the hazards of the materials personnel may use when participating in this training. The Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) are maintained by the training facilitator for all hazardous materials used/provided for this training course. MSDSs list the products by their common trade name or by manufacture name (one or both may appear on the product label). MSDSs contain the physical data for the product such as the product form, reactive characteristics, and material description as well as the precautions for safe handling of the product, such as recommended protective clothing and safe work environment conditions.
