Course Objectives:

The overall course objective is to provide the student with both a theoretical familiarity and practical operational competence in the Global Maritime Distress and Safety System.

Specific Objectives:

  • Background and Purpose of GMDSS
  • Principles and basic features of maritime mobile service, including satellite service
  • Purpose and Use of Digital Selective Calling facilities, narrow band direct printing and Inmarsat
  • Operation and Use of Emergency Indicating Radio Beacons (EPIRBS)

The purpose of the course is to ensure upon completion of training the minimum standard of competence to undertake duties on oil tankers.

Course Objectives:

Basic Safety Training

(First Aid & CPR, Basic Marine Fire Fighting, Personal Safety
& Social Responsibilities, Personal Survival Techniques)

The course consists of four component training programs: First Aid & CPR, Basic Marine Fire Fighting, Personal Safety & Social Responsibilities, Personal Survival Techniques.

Course Objectives:

First Aid & CPR

  • Application of various resuscitation techniques
  • Application of various techniques to clear a foreign body airway blockage
  • Control of Bleeding from an injured person
  • Method of immobilizing a fracture using splint sand ties
  • Leading a group of rescuers in placing an injured person on a spine board
  • Techniques for bandaging using typical first aid kit materials

Basic Marine Fire Fighting

  • Proper donning of a fire fighter's outfit (turnout gear)
  • Proper fire fighting procedures for small (incipient) class A, B, and C fires
  • Proper donning method of a self-contained breathing apparatus
  • Proper usage of a breathing apparatus under normal and simulated
  • emergency conditions
  • Proper hose team leader procedures for extinguishing extensive fires and procedures for effecting a rescue

Personal Safety & Social Responsibilities

  • Instruction in the area of social responsibility and human relationships

Personal Survival Techniques

  • Proper donning of a Coast Guard Approved lifejacket and immersion suit
  • Properly jumping into the water from a height while wearing a Coast Guard

Hazardous / Safety Awareness Notice

29 CFR 1910.1200 (Hazardous Communication Standard) requires training and information on the hazards of the materials personnel may use when participating in this training. The Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) are maintained by the training facilitator for all hazardous materials used/provided for this training course. MSDSs list the products by their common trade name or by manufacture name (one or both may appear on the product label). MSDSs contain the physical data for the product such as the product form, reactive characteristics, and material description as well as the precautions for safe handling of the product, such as recommended protective clothing and safe work environment conditions.

Students who successfully complete the training will have satisfied: 1) The Survival Craft Training requirements of Section A-VI/2 and Table A-VI/2-1 of the STCW Code; 2)the training requirements of 46 CFR 12.10-3(a)(6) for endorsement as Lifeboatman, provided that sea service requirements are also met; 3) the written and practical examination requirements of CFR 12.10-5 for any endorsement as Lifeboatman; 4)the written "Survival Craft" exmination requirements of 46 CFR 12.05-9 for an endorsement as Able Seaman-Offshore Supply Vessel (exm module 441XX) provided that all other requirements of 46 CFR Subpart 12.05, including sea service are also met.
